At the weekend Harwich Angling Club travelled to the River Chelmer at Papermill Lock to fish the fifth of six Essex Inter Club League matches for the 2008/2009 season. On a bright and chilly day with the river running through at a pace, Harwich Angling Club put out their strongest team available.
Drawing peg number 2 for all the six sections, together with bait selection and presentation being crucial, it was going to be a challenging task. When all the results came in it showed to be a low weight match with no angler getting into double figures and a few not even catching a fish.
Harwich Angling Club finished in a lowly seventh place for the match achieving a team total of 28 points even though every one in the team picked up some points. Once again it was two of the clubs top match anglers who got their tactics just about right. John Shepard (F2) weighing in with 0lb 11ozs and picking up 8 points and Bob Oakley (B2) weighing in with 1lb 15ozs and picking up 7 points.
The other members of the squad were Keith Allen (A2) with 0lb 8ozs getting 2 points, Graeme Edgar (C2) with 2lbs 5ozs getting 6 points, Laurie Snell (D2) with 0lb 8ozs getting 4 points and Chris Gouveia (E2) with 0lb 5ozs getting 1 point. This result has maintained Harwich Angling Clubs second place position in the league with 34.5 points. With the last match being at Blashford Lakes in January 2010, Harwich Angling Club are looking to finish now as the runners up in the league, as Maldon AC clinched the winners place by winning this match.
